Another Edmonton restaurant has jumped on board the beer dinner train. Over the past few months Continental Treat Fine Bistro has been re-working its beer list, offering a longer, more balanced range of bottled beer and they are also the first location to carry Koenigshoeven Tripel on tap. They have made enough progress to announce their first attempt at a beer dinner.

The brewmaster for Austrian brewery Brauerei Scholss Eggenberg will be in Edmonton, and Continental Treat, who specialized in central and eastern European cuisine, is crafting a dinner in his honour. Eggenberg is Austria’s oldest brewery and is known for its range of German-style lagers and ales, including their Ur-Bock and their Doppelbock. They are also, of course, the brewery of Samiclaus, the monster 14% alcohol uber-bock.

The dinner is Wednesday November 2 and hosted by the brewmaster, who will walk through their beer and brewing process. As goes for most beer dinners, each dish will be made and paired with an appropiate Eggenberg beer. Tickets are $65. Call Continental Treat (780-433-7432) for tickets.

Continental Treats says they are planning other occasional beer dinners in the new year. I am encouraged at the steady growth of beer and food events in Edmonton. It is a further sign of the slow maturation of the city’s appreciation for beer.
