In regards to "cheaper alternatives," in my punk rock days, our band was staying in East Vancouver with some friends. The drink of choice was tallboys of Molson Extra Old Stock (malt liquor), which we drank like crazy for days, as it was cheap. However, after 3 days or so of indulging, our hosts were low on cash, but still wanted to party, so they switched to crack, which was cheaper than a 6-pack, and you could buy it from some dudes that were hanging outside the liquor store. Every time I walked in there (at least twice a day), these dudes would start yelling, "Who needs rock? Got some BIG ROCK right here!" like they were hawking popcorn at a baseball game.

It was pretty sad, but also downright shocking for a prairie hick like myself.

You forgot one of the world's highest rated coffee infused beers Dieu du Ciel's Peche Mortel. Currently on Ratebeer's top fifty beers in the world and the highest rated beer brewed in Canada according to that same website. As president Stephen Ostiguy says about the beer when he wants to drink all night this beer has enough booze in it to close one eye and enough coffee in it to keep the other eye open.

Of course this alone won't stop street people from buying cheap alcohol.

What it does is allow Molson to say that they aren't responsible for the problems associated with alcohol and street people. It gives them a clearer conscience, and it is deserved for turning down these sales.

And for many of us non-street people, it gives Molson a clear advantage over companies who continue to peddle firewater.

Greg,

Thanks for the correction. I have to admit I don't know Paul Dickey (probably because I am a westerner). Could you give us a quick sense of his track record? Thanks.

Cheers.

Having tried a lot of Paul Dickey's beers, I am looking forward to the Hops & Robbers IPA.

Small correction to Hoser's comment: Double Trouble is having their beer - which is called Hops & Robbers IPA - contract brewed at Wellington in Ontario, not Beau's. He's right about their plans to work with several breweries across Canada to build a nationwide brand, though.

It's quite a good beer (which is to be expected given that the brewmaster in Paul Dickey, one of the best brewers of UK-style ales in Canada) - but being a well-hopped by not super-aggressively bitter IPA, it's also in a segment of the craft brewing market that's getting pretty crowded. So it'll be interesting to see how it does.

Hello Folks
This is good news for us Brits. We are planning to come to canoe down the Yukon this summer. Good to hear there is micro-brewery beer around. Is it available in Whitehorse and Dawson City? It will be very welcome!

Just Black Oak & Denison's for me. Flying Monkeys are too erratic with their bottlings and their Smashbomb was undrinkable on tap, IMO. Flying Monkey's have great marketing but their beers lack that something to make them great.

FYI Flying Monkeys re-branded after brewing for a few years as "Robert Simpson". Like the name, the initial offering followed what many Ontario brands offered...safe but bland beers. I do like that people choose to drink local "bland" over mass-produced "bland" like they are starting to in Ontario, but it's even better to see a brewery take off when they stray away from what commercials tell people to like.

Love the idea, but I would like to see Calgary's membership numbers to back up the claim. EHG has been getting a ridiculously high attendance rate lately, and they all seem to be brewers and not just "appreciators" (not that there is anything wrong with the latter). I'm not saying Calgary is wrong, but it is good to see that all the clubs are having a high rate of participation, and I hope that continues to grow. Homebrew has come a long way from when someone's "crazy uncle" made an undrinkable batch of "homebrew". I'm obviously biased, being an extreme homebrewer myself, but I only wish that someone would put out great and creative brews like that can be done with homebrew nowadays.
